Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir has banned heavy trucks from using major city roads between 6am to 9am and 3:30pm to 8pm.
While addressing the North Coast Ratepayers and Residents’ Association (NCRRA) at his Mombasa office on Friday, the Governor said the move aims at reducing traffic congestion during peak hours in the Coastal city.
“One of the things that is going to assist us reduce traffic in the city is that we’ve introduced timings for heavy trucks,” the county boss said.
“The trucks will be restricted from using Nyali Bridge, Fidel Odinga Road, Ferry area, New and Old Malindi Road.”
Governor Nassir’s directive comes at a time the Coastal city has been grappling with heavy traffic snarl-ups
In February last year, former Governor Hassan Ali Joho’s administration unveiled a plan to decongest the city following increased motorised transportation in the area.
The then County Executive for Transport and Infrastructure Taufiq Balala introduced a one-way system flow for all vehicles.
“We have decided to launch the one-way system to ease the flow of traffic coming or leaving the island. There has been a rise in the number of vehicles but it is difficult to expand the roads,” he said then.
