Messi subbed off 37 minutes after start of Inter Miami and Toronto FC game

Messi was notably absent from the lineup in Miami's recent match against Atlanta United, which ended in a 5-2 loss. After the Atlanta United game, head coach Gerardo "Tata" Martino revealed that Messi could not play due to muscle fatigue. This raised concerns about his availability for Wednesday night.

Fullback Jordi Alba had also rested during the previous weekend's game, leaving doubts about whether or not the pair would participate in the Toronto match.

Alba started in the game against Toronto but was substituted three minutes before Messi, who appeared to make the decision to leave the game on his own. The Apple TV broadcast did note it appeared Messi had a slight limp and Alba was seen icing his hamstring

Post-match, Martino told reporters, "There is no chance for them to play the Orlando match (on Sunday), but I do not think there is anything serious or muscle injuries. I think it is just fatigue."

Messi was replaced during the game by Robert Taylor and moved to the Miami bench. While sitting on the bench, he was observed stretching his right hamstring, causing concern for his well-being. This prompted Inter Miami fans to become visibly upset and eventually exit the stadium early.

Messi's appearance against Toronto was notable as it marked his 12th match within 48 days. This demanding stretch included a significant milestone, as Messi played a crucial role in Inter Miami securing the Leagues Cup title.

As Messi exited the field, the team captain displayed a gracious gesture of sportsmanship by passing his armband to Inter Miami's former captain, DeAndre Yedlin, symbolizing the transition of leadership within the team.

The 36-year-old Argentine star has missed two recent matches for Inter Miami — Atlanta and a 3-2 win against Sporting KC while representing his national team. Due to fatigue, Messi missed Argentina's World Cup qualifying match against Bolivia on September 12 which Argentina won 3-0.

Messi was not made available for comment in the days leading up to these matches, leaving fans and media curious about his health and playing status.
