Makueni: Police officer shot dead by a colleague

An Administration Police (AP) officer attached to the Critical Infrastructure Police Unit (CIPU) in Mbooni West, Makueni County is being detained for fatally shooting his colleague on Friday.

The suspect, Constable Anthony Mariapei, and the deceased, Hassan Ahmed, were on duty guarding the office of Mbooni West Deputy County Commissioner when the night incident occurred.

A police officer manning the report office at Mbooni Police Station, which is just 40 metres away from the DCC's office, heard the gunshots, alerting other officers who rushed to the scene.

"It is then that they found a police officer in APS uniform and a G3 rifle beside him squatting. On trying to talk to him, it was realized that the officer was bleeding on the left side of the ribs," a police report on the incident reads.

"On further examination, it was discovered that he had been shot by use of a firearm and he was dead."

Moments later, Mariapei presented himself at Mbooni Police Station where he reportedly admitted to shooting Ahmed.

"After a short while APC Anthony Mariapei an officer attached to CIPU Mbooni West and who was on night guard duty at the DCC's office surrendered at Mbooni police station claiming that he had shot No.237720 APC Hassan Ahmed using G3 s/no A3 J54444 issued to him," said the police report.

"The motive of the murder is not yet established. The accused officer has been placed in cells pending investigations. Both G3 rifles loaded with 18 rounds and 20 rounds issued to both the accused and deceased officers respectively, have been detained as exhibits pending ballistic examinations."

The deceased's body has since been moved to Mbooni West Sub-County Referral Hospital mortuary pending post-mortem.
