M-Kopa has announced that it has assembled over 1.5 million smartphones at its Nairobi-based facility, East Africa Device Assembly Kenya (EADAK).
Since opening in January 2023 in partnership with Human Mobile Devices (HMD), EADAK has grown to become sub-Saharan Africa’s largest smartphone assembly plant, following substantial investment in local manufacturing.
Martin Kingori, General Manager of M-Kopa Kenya, highlighted the company’s commitment to expanding digital inclusion and connectivity by making affordable smartphones accessible.
“Assembling our devices in Kenya is something we are extremely proud of. It demonstrates our commitment to making quality smartphones affordable and accessible to millions of Kenyans, bringing digital connectivity to people across the country,” he said.
In its 2024 Annual Impact Report, M-Kopa also reported surpassing five million customers across Kenya, Uganda, Nigeria, Ghana, and South Africa, unlocking $1.5 billion in credit as part of its mission to deepen digital and financial inclusion across Africa.
Over the past year, the fintech giant added two million new customers across its markets.
Beyond expanding digital access, the assembly facility has helped strengthen Kenya’s economy by creating tech-focused job opportunities, particularly for Kenyan youth.
Earlier this year, M-Kopa and HMD celebrated the release of the M-Kopa X20 model and the milestone of one million locally assembled devices.
The company now aims to reach 10 million locally produced smartphones by 2027, building on its current sales of over 3.3 million smartphones in Kenya since 2020.
