The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) has condemned the recent violence meted on officials and members of the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Union (KMPDU) as they were protesting on Thursday, February 29, 2024.
Speaking during a presser on Monday, March 4, 2024, LSK President-elect Faith Odhiambo strongly condemned the incident saying it was a violation of the constitution.
"The Law Society of Kenya wishes to condemn in the strongest terms possible the willful disregard for the law being demonstrated by government agencies. On Thursday 29th February 2024, officials and members of the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Union (KMPDU), led medical interns in a peaceful protest over the delayed posting of medical interns and payment of fees for postgraduate students.
"The Police responded by deploying disproportionate force against the protesters leading to the shooting of KMPDU Secretary General Davji," she stated.
Faith also stated that LSK will be seeking legal redress on the matter and reiterated LSK's commitment to ensuring that the rule of law is upheld.
She also called on the Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome and the Independent Policing Oversight Authority IPOA to take charge of the matter and ensure that all perpetrators are brought to book.
“The society will join in solidarity with KMPDU in taking all necessary action to ensure justice is served for Dr Davji. We demand that the Inspector General of Police and IPOA arrest the rogue individuals involved," she stated.
