Two women are now pleading for justice and the arrest of an Indian national who shot them and left them for dead, following an incident in Laikipia that left them with wounds and bullets in their bodies a month ago.
Daphne Karwitha and Penina Kinoti say that they were shot at while leaving a cricket tournament in Laikipia on Saturday, June 22.
They were accompanied by a mutual friend, who is reportedly dating the shooting suspect.
During a party after the tournament, Karwitha claims she saw two of the ladies she had shared a taxi with in an altercation with the suspect.
One of the women involved in the altercation is said to be in a relationship with the shooting suspect.
"We were a team of five ladies who had gone to watch a cricket match in Ol Pejeta, we were in a taxi,"Karwitha revealed.
"There was a party but during the party I could see some of the two ladies I was with arguing with the man who would later shoot us."
The women claim that while returning from the tournament, the suspect sped past them as they approached a thicket before making a sudden about turn.
According to Karwitha, the suspect then stopped near their taxi and opened fire on his girlfriend, injuring two others.
One of the women was seriously injured in her stomach in the ensuing gun drama, and the other still had a bullet embedded in her back.
Lawyers Lucy Kaaria and Onayo Mbele, representing the two women, have read malice into the shooting saga, claiming that despite being positively identified, the suspect has yet to be arrested and arraigned.
"That our client was unlawfully and without any legal justifiable reasons shot by the Suspect Yagnik Jagiblue on the 22* June 2024 at OLPAJETA AREA," a letter written to the DPP by the lawyers read.
"Our client sustained serious injuries and was admitted at Nanyuki General Hospital where she underwent surgery and treatment as a result of the gunshot wounds."
The matter was reported at Nanyuki police station and an OB No./08/22/6/24 was issued in regard to the incident.
Since the report was filed, the lawyers claim that the suspect, who is still at large, has threatened the complainants in person and through proxies to harm them if they do not withdraw the case.
"Despite the incident having occurred over a month ago no action has been taken by the police and/or the DCI towards charging the suspect person in court," the lawyers say in the letter to the DPP.
"The suspect has now resulted to calling the client severally by himself or through proxies in an attempt to threaten and intimidate them that if they do not withdraw the complaints against him then he would harm and/or "finish them".
The legal team now wants the DPP to obtain the file from the police, claiming that their efforts have been frustrated.
They claim that despite appearing in court on 22/07/24, when they were told the suspect would enter a plea, nothing happened.
They were reportedly told that the suspect was not available and that the file was not yet ready.
"The victims were informed by the investigating officer that the suspect would be aligned at Nanyuki Law courts on 22/07/24 for plea taking, only for the victims to appear in court and be informed that the suspect was not available and the file was not ready," the letter reads.
