23 children and school-going youth were on Sunday released from police custody after intervention by the Law Society of Kenya (LSK).

LSK President Faith Odhiambo, in a statement, revealed that the minors, including 19 children and 4 school-going youth, were set free after Justice Grace Nzioka revised orders by a lower court.

"Lady Justice Nzioka of the High Court of Naivasha sat today ( Sunday)and revised the orders of the lower court. All the 19 children plus 4 other school-going youth were released on favourable bail/ bond terms pending hearing and determination of the case," Odhiambo stated.

"The children were told to ensure that they reported to school early tomorrow morning. We thank the proactive court for sitting on a Sunday morning to ensure the protection of the rights of the children."

The minors were among over 120 individuals who were arrested on Tuesday, June 25, for looting a supermarket in Naivasha.

The suspects were also accused of raiding the office of Naivasha MP Jane Kihara and a nearby hotel.

All the suspects were charged with three counts among them stealing and damaging property. The supermarket reportedly incurred losses of Ksh70 million while the hotel lost Ksh30 million.

The suspects were later released on a cash bond of Ksh200,000 with an alternative bail of Ksh100,000 and were transferred to Naivasha Remand Prison. The terms of which have since been revised.

The arrest of the minors was first revealed by a prominent influencer in the X Space who noted that a parent of one of the children revealed that they were held at Naivasha Police Station.

The parent noted that the children were detained for participating in protests against the controversial Finance Bill.

She further lamented that parents have been denied access to visit or communicate with their detained children.

A string of arrests and abductions have been reported across the country since the anti-Finance Bill, 2024 was tabled.
