The sentencing of Joseph Irungu alias Jowie has been postponed to Wednesday, March 13th.
This is after Lady Justice Grace Nzioka pointed out that crucial documents expected to assist the court in reaching its final decision had been filed as late as last evening at 7pm.
The postponement was also occasioned by a change of counsel by the accused Jowie Irungu, whom the judge noted had not filed a mitigation report as would be expected.
Jowie's lawyer told the court he would need one week to go through the pre-sentencing report and reply to it, a request that the court declined.
Justice Nzioka thus directed that the replies be filed by Tuesday next week for her to deliver the sentence on Wednesday.
Last month, the High Court found Jowie guilty of the murder of businesswoman Monica Nyawira Kimani, who was brutally killed on the night of September 19, 2018, at her Lamuria Gardens apartment in Nairobi.
Delivering the judgment on February 9, 2024, Lady Justice Nzioka ruled that the prosecution had adduced adequate evidence and proved beyond reasonable doubt that Jowie indeed killed Monica.
Former TV news anchor Jacque Maribe, who was charged alongside Irungu, was however acquitted of the murder charge, with the judge stating that the count of murder was not the proper charge that the prosecution would have preferred against her.
