Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja paid a visit to the dangerous 'bridge' in Njiru ward that was highlighted in a now-viral video on Friday.
This comes after a video of a local atop the structure went viral, revealing the deplorable conditions that area residents have been forced to endure.
The structure, according to the man in the video, connects two neighbourhoods and is used by locals to cross over on both sides.
He alleged that the 'bridge' has been grossly neglected and lacks any safety rails, putting local residents at a significant risk.
Additionally, he presented evidence of sewage being discharged into the Nairobi River from beneath the structure.
However, Governor Sakaja, after his inspection, has revealed that the structure was never intended to be used as a bridge but is actually an old trunk sewer.
He stated that county engineers have been dispatched to the site and have designed an alternative pedestrian footbridge, separate from the trunk sewer, for people to use.
Furthermore, the Governor assigned blame to farmers in the area for causing blockages in the sewer system, with the intention of utilizing the sewage for irrigating their farms.
"The sewer pouring into the drainage (rather than the river) is due to illegal farming, in which farmers infiltrate the sewer and block it in order to use the spillage for their farms." "Our engineers are unclogging the sewer line, and we will deal with those who are breaking the law," he said.
"We have agreed with the residents that the Trunk Sewer will no longer be used as a path once the bridge is completed."
