Government confirms police officers received a pay rise from July 1, 2024

The government has confirmed that all police officers received a pay hike from July 1, 2024, as part of the reforms to restore efficiency and integrity in the security forces.

In a statement, Interior PS Raymond Omollo explained that the salary hike occurred in phases, with the first phase involving constables who received a 40 per cent salary increase, with the percentage decreasing for officers in higher ranks.

The second phase will begin in September 2024 and will involve officers from the Kenya Prisons Service (KPS) and National Youth Service (NYS).

The reforms are part of the recommendations of the taskforce on police reforms chaired by former Chief Justice David Maraga.

President William Ruto formed the taskforce in December 2022 to spearhead reforms in the three services; KPS, NPS and NYS.

The taskforce recommended the reforms to take place for four years, focusing on four core areas that include leadership within the three services, oversight and accountability, institutional capacity development and human resource management, and operational preparedness and logistical capability.

The government established a Technical Committee on Development of Legal and Policy Frameworks to ensure all reforms are implemented by 2028. The committee will be assisted by reform units within the services.

"We reaffirm our commitment to fully implementing these reforms which are essential for strengthening the country’s security sector and enhancing service delivery to all Kenyans," the statement read in part.
