Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba announced that 1,693 candidates scored Grade A in the 2024 KCSE examinations.

Speaking during the release of the exams on Thursday, January 9, the CS revealed that the number of students who scored A increased. In 2023, only 1216 students attained the mean grade of A.

The 1,693 students represented 0.18 per cent of the over 900,000 candidate class.

Students who attained the University entry grade of C+ and above in the 2024 KCSE examinations were 246, 391. This was 25.53 per cent of the candidate class.

476, 889 students managed to get a mean grade of C- (Minus) and above.

Meanwhile, 605, 774 candidates score D+ and above in the 2024 national examinations.

Ogamba attributed the improved performance to the new grading system, also used in 2023.

In the new grading system, KNEC grades students best on their performance in Mathematics, the best-performing language subject and the best-performing remaining 5 five subjects.

Performance in Subjects

The subjects which recorded significant improvement were Mathematics Alt. A & B, Biology, Physics, Chemistry, General Science, History & Government, Geography, IRE, Agriculture, Woodwork, Metalwork, Drawing & Design, Aviation Technology, Computer Studies, Kenyan Sign Language and Business Studies.

Conversely, 10 subjects recorded a drop in performance. They included English, Kiswahili, Biology for the Blind, CRE, Home Science, Building Construction, Electricity, French, German and Music.

Female candidates recorded better mean score performance than male candidates in the following seven subjects; English, Kiswahili, Kenyan Sign Language, French, Home Science, CRE and Art & design.

Male candidates recorded better mean score performance than female candidates in 23 subjects including Mathematics Alt. A & B, Biology & Biology for the Blind, Physics, Chemistry, General Science, History & Government, Geography, IRE, Woodwork, Metal work, Building & Construction, Power Mechanics, Electricity, Drawing & Design, Aviation Technology, Agriculture, Computer Studies, German, Arabic, Music and Business Studies.
