Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has strongly condemned what he describes as an orchestrated plot to tarnish his reputation and destabilise his office.
In a public statement posted on social media platform X, Gachagua expressed concern about what he claims are politically motivated attempts to associate him with the violent anti-government protests of June and July.
"Kenyans are intelligent people. They know what factors made Kenyans take to the streets and are well aware of the real problems facing the country. They surely know Rigathi is not among them," he remarked, asserting that he remains uninvolved in the unrest.
Gachagua accused unnamed people of attempting to implicate him in the protests as part of a larger plot to lay the groundwork for possible impeachment proceedings.
He described the incident as a "futile attempt" to tarnish his reputation, stating that law enforcement agencies should be professional and avoid political battles.
"I have learned of a scheme to prefer trumped-up charges against three members of my staff, as well as Embakasi North MP James Gakuya and Embakasi Central MP Benjamin Gathiru MejjaDonk," Gachagua revealed, expressing disappointment at what he perceives as a targeted attack on those close to him.
The deputy president also criticised the use of the criminal justice system for political purposes, describing it as an outdated strategy from Kenya's past.
"President William Ruto and I, upon assuming office, made a commitment to the people of Kenya that the criminal justice system would no longer be used to manage politics," he emphasized.
Gachagua’s claims come amidst mounting tension within Kenya’s political landscape, as opposition groups have continued to protest against the current administration.
He expressed concern that the recent harassment of his office staff and allied Members of Parliament over the past two months signals a return to politically driven tactics of the past.
