Could Africa be the next home to the world’s richest man? Perhaps, if US President Donald Trump’s assertion to look into the possibility of deporting Elon Musk to Africa becomes a reality.
Before departing the White House for a visit to an immigration detention facility on Tuesday, Trump was asked by reporters if he would consider deporting Musk back to South Africa for his continued opposition to the president’s current tax legislation.
“I don’t know. We’ll have to take a look,” Trump answered.
@abcnewsPresident Trump told reporters Tuesday his administration will "have to take a look" at deporting Elon Musk after the billionaire reignited the feud with the president over his spending bill. The Tesla billionaire was born on June 28, 1971, in Pretoria, South Africa, to a South African father and Canadian mother. He immigrated to Canada in 1989 before proceeding to America for further studies.
He became a naturalised American citizen in 2002. He is also a Canadian citizen through his mother.
The two, among the most powerful men in the world, have reignited their hostilities, driven by a piece of legislation currently moving through Congress.
The bill aims to strengthen border security by allocating over $100 billion to immigration, deportation operations, and new border facilities. Trump says it will cut wasteful spending.
However, Musk has termed Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill” bill “insane,” saying it risks eroding the gains made through him in his former role as head of the amorphous Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which cut government spending that has since affected US-funded programmes across the world.
Trump said Musk fears the legislation will erode Tesla’s electric vehicles’ tax credits that made him raise their prices. The president stated that “without subsidies, Elon would probably have to close up shop and head back home to South Africa.”
Tesla’s stock has been on a downward trend in recent times following the spat between the two men.
Musk promised to create a new political party to rival the two dominant parties, the Republican and Democratic parties, vowing to campaign for the removal of those who have voted for the bill that he said would raise the debt ceiling by five trillion dollars.

“Anyone who campaigned on the promise of reducing spending but continues to vote on the biggest debt ceiling increase in history will see their face on this poster in the primary next year,” he wrote on his platform, X, with a Pinocchio caricature emblazoned with the word ‘Liar.’ “If this insane spending bill passes, the America Party will be formed the next day.”
Apart from threatening Musk with deportation, Trump, writing on his Truth Social, said he could unleash DOGE upon Musk, its former executor-in-chief.
“We might have to put DOGE on Elon. You know what DOGE is? DOGE is the monster that might have to go back and eat Elon. Wouldn't that be terrible?” wrote Trump.
As Trump feuds with his former ‘First Buddy’, it remains to be seen whether the president will make true his threats to deport Musk back to Africa. If he does, then Africa will be home to the richest man on earth.
