The Chinese Embassy in Kenya has confirmed that a Chinese worker who assaulted his Kenyan colleague at a private company, has been sacked.

In a statement on Sunday, November 16, 2025, China termed the incident “extremely disappointing”, expressing regret over the confrontation.

“We have noticed a video circulating online showing a Chinese worker at a private company assaulting his Kenyan colleague. We are extremely disappointed to see such an incident occur,” the Embassy said.

“As we are informed, the company’s management has immediately terminated the Chinese worker’s contract and will consider further disciplinary action.”

The Embassy emphasized that it maintains strict expectations for all Chinese citizens living and working in Kenya.

“The Embassy consistently requires Chinese citizens in Kenya to strictly abide by local laws, regulations, and cultural customs, and the vast majority of them do so.”

While acknowledging the severity of the assault, the Embassy urged against generalizing one individual’s actions to the broader relationship between Kenya and China.

“We believe this isolated incident should not affect investment cooperation between Chinese and Kenyan companies,” the statement said, stressing the need for continued partnership and goodwill.

However, it also underscored that the incident serves as a cautionary reminder.

“It is a reminder to all Chinese citizens in Kenya to uphold the principle of mutual respect with Kenyan friends and behave in accordance to the laws, regulations, and cultural customs of Kenya,” the statement added.

The video has sparked public debate across social media platforms, with many Kenyans calling for stricter oversight of foreign workers and improved protection for Kenyan employees.

Earlier on, Central Organisation of Trade Unions (COTU) Secretary-General Francis Atwoli has demanded the immediate deportation of the Chinese national.

Atwoli said the action was unacceptable and called on the government to take firm steps to protect Kenyan workers from mistreatment by foreign investors operating in the country.

“COTU (K) demands the immediate deportation of the Chinese national captured on video assaulting a Kenyan worker at TCM Mabati Factory,” Atwoli stated.

“We also call upon you to deport other rogue Chinese investors, including those running some entities in the EPZ, who force Kenyans to sing Chinese songs. The Government of Kenya must guarantee the dignity of Kenyans working in various locally based foreign investments.”
