According to Bomet East Sub-County Police Commander Michael Singa, the suspect, Faith Cherono, allegedly went to her boyfriend's house on Tuesday to demand the return of a mobile phone she claimed belonged to her.
An argument is said to have occurred between the two, but the couple later agreed to resolve the issue later in the day.
However, witnesses reported seeing the pair walking together towards the Mau Forest area shortly afterwards.
Police investigations indicate that it was there that Cherono allegedly attacked her boyfriend, Emanuel Kiprono, 33, fatally striking him on the back of the head with a sword.
After the incident, the suspect is said to have fled the scene and crossed into Narok County, where she surrendered herself at Tendwet Police Station.
