Menstrual hygiene day is marked on 28th May annually. The celebration aims to highlight the importance of good menstrual hygiene for all women and girls globally.
This year's theme is: Making Menstruation a Normal Fact of Life by 2030.
All women and girls across the world have a right to safe, hygienic and dignified menstrual experience.
Different organizations and societies have committed themselves to end period poverty and educate everyone about menstruation.
UNICEF reveals that 65% of all menstruating girls and women in Kenya cannot access sanitary pads and face many challenges related to menstruation. These women lack basic sanitary facilities, sanitary pads and the relevant education on menstrual health.
Speaking at the launch of Glow's Pad Bank that will offer free sanitary pads, Senator Gloria Orwoba noted that periods are an essential part of a girls life.
"We must come together and end period stigma to ensure that no girl misses school during their menstruation. It's time to prioritize menstrual equity," said Orobwa.
The Senator added that periods are not a luxury, they are a fundamental aspect of a girls health and wel being.
Children should be equipped with the correct information at a young age inorder to end the stigma that comes with menstruation.
Stakeholders in the health sector have expressed the need for the society to breakdown barriers and create a future where menstruation is a source of shame but a catalyst for empowerment and equality for all women and girls.
