Nakuru County government begins exhuming dead bodies in the cemetery to create space for more bodies to be buried

The Nakuru County Government is on the spot over allegations of exhuming bodies from the Nakuru South Cemetery to create space for more bodies to be buried on the grounds.

A spot check at the South Cemetery on Thursday afternoon revealed hollow graves, some scattered skeletons, and decomposed human remains.

Residents of the area, who have been raising concerns, report that old graves have been dug up, revealing coffin lids just two feet beneath the surface.

They say the Nakuru County government embarked on exhuming bodies on Monday night in order to create space for families to bury their loved ones.

A video making rounds on social media, captured on Monday, shows human skeletons being stashed in a sack.

"Kwa sasa tunaona kuna mifupa, ni ya watu hii, wanachimbua, huku chini kuna watu wanangoja ikijaa wanarudi mwanzo," Kevin Kamau, a Nakuru resident, said.

"Hii kaburi ilikuwa imefukiwa ikajaa, sasa wanarudia kuweka wafu wengine," Peter Gateri, another resident, added.

The residents added that the standard grave depth of six feet has been disregarded in favour of only two to four feet deep graves.

"Ningependa watenge mahali pengine, katika Imani ya waafrika si vizuri kurudia, kuna nafasi kubwa, badala ya mashamba council wachukue wanunue waweke wafu hapo," said Gateri.

In response to these claims, the Nakuru County Government, through a statement, denied the exhumation allegations, claiming that its mandated to do regular maintenance of the graveyard.
