6 dead, 16 injured after a deadly fire incident in Kamukunji, Nairobi county

At least six people were killed, 16 injured and 50 households destroyed following a fire incident at Kitui Village in Majengo, Kamukunji, Nairobi County.

In an update on Tuesday, November 19, the Kenya Red Cross said it managed to contain the fire and initiated efforts to locate missing people.

"Together with the Nairobi City County Fire Department and community members, we have managed to contain a fire incident in Kitui Village, Majengo, Nairobi.

"Around 50 households were affected and sixteen people sustained minor injuries, all of whom were treated by Kenya Red Cross. The Kenya Red Cross remains on-site, supporting efforts to locate missing persons," the organization said.

In a statement, Kamukunji MP Yusuf Hassan said the incident was one deadliest fire incidents ever witnessed in the constituency.

"This tragedy marks one of the deadliest fires in Kamukunji. Emergency teams are on the scene, searching the affected area for additional victims. Many of the injured have been taken to nearby hospitals for treatment," he said.

This incident followed another deadly fire that broke out on Monday night, November 18, razing down 50 households in Mlango Kubwa, Mathare.

Confirming the incident, the Kenya Red Cross disclosed that the fire was later successfully contained through the efforts of an emergency response team.

"Fire outbreak reported in Mathare, Mlango Kubwa area. Our Community-Based Disaster Response Teams (CBDRTs) are at the scene.

"Fire was contained by fire brigades alongside CBDRTs. An approximate 50 HHs were affected with no casualties involved," the Kenya Red Cross stated.
