Family of Kenyan officer who died in the US speaks out

The family of the Kenyan officer who died in the US has confirmed their son had left Kenya to prepare for the deployment of a multinational security support mission.

The body of Chief Inspector Walter Nyamato Nyankieya was found in his hotel room on Tuesday morning.

The father spoke to Nation in its Thursday night bulletin that his son had joined the AP in 2007 and worked for 16 years.

"He called last week to tell us he was leaving for Washington. I asked him to visit us before, just like he always does before leaving for a mission" his father recalled

According to the father, the officer had left twice already for a similar meeting.

The AP officer informed his father that there wasn't enough time, and the trip was urgent

"Akasema wakati huu sita kuaj niko na kazi mingi na hii inaonekana tutaenda haraka. "

The father asked him for his flight details

"I asked him when he was leaving, and he said they were leaving that weekend. Kwa hivyo ilivo fika siku ya Ijumaa, iloyopita, amma akampigia simu. saa tatu ya usiku."

The AP officer was asked about his whereabouts

"Akatuambia niko Airport nafanya clearance, we will board the plane saa sita ya usiku. "

His parents then prayed for him via phone

"Tukawmabia basi wacha tukuombee uende safari njema. "

The AP officer said he was in the company of 10 other officers.

"Basi wakaenda, sisi tukalala "

The family assumed he was still en route to the US the next day Saturday

"Siku ya Jumamosi tulikuwa tunajua alikuwa anaendelea ku safiri . Jumapili tukaenda kanisani. Sasa jana usiku wa kuamkia, we got a phone call from my wife's brother, in Nairobi who inquired how many children I have in the US. "

The father informed him about the demise of Walter.

"Because you are a man, let me tell you openly. Walter is no more. I asked him eh, what are you saying, he said Walter is dead. Then I asked him who informed him." The relative told him the information was from a friend of Walter.

Walter had also called his brother who lives in the US. They were to meet. He believed the source

"Mama akaanza kulia, nikamwambia fungua mlango, enda inje ukalie, kwa maana because I believe the source. "

According to the Miami Herald,

"The official was a senior police officer who had traveled to the United States to attend talks with U.S., U.N. and Haitian officials at Fort McNair on plans for a multinational force deployment to Haiti, a National Security Council official said.

The D.C. Metropolitan Police Department said the official, identified as 39-year-old Nyamato Walter, was found dead in his hotel room on Tuesday at approximately 9:05 a.m. at a hotel in Thomas Circle, in the center of the city.

Officers responded to the unit block of Thomas Circle NW for the report of an unconscious man inside of a hotel room. Upon arrival, the man was pronounced deceased,” the police department said.
